The Last House

The only house that was not burned down by the mob in 1923 is the home of John Wright. This beautiful cannon housewas for sale.It was a three-story Victorian with stained-glass windows and 35 acres.

Thearticleis by Lane DeGregory, a Pulitzer Prize winner. Theoriginal articleby Gary Moore appeared in the Floridian section of the St. Petersburg Times on July 25, 1982.

The Real Rosewood Foundation, a nonprofit that aims to preserve the history of Rosewood, has been working to save the house for 30 years. In July 2021, the owner, Ian Stone, wanted to donate the houseto the foundation, but funds were needed to move the house to Archer. The Rosewood Heritage Foundation wants to use the house as an educational heritage center and museum to memorialize the African-American community chased out of Rosewood.
